Q: Percents are considered the most difficult and problematic topic in middle school. How can you teach it, using only a book, in less than 5 hours and promise that students will be 100% proficient in it?
Percents are actually easy. They are easy if you know fractions and decimal fractions well, and if some key issues are explained correctly.
Q: What are those key issue then?
The first is that percents are just fractions. The second is that they are not absolute but relative. The other part is the right flow of lessons about percents related topics.
Q: What do you mean by “relative” and what do you mean by “right flow”?
To understand the first you have to use the book, after all, if it was trivial to teach in one short sentence, everyone would and no one would have problems with percents. The “right flow” is about the sequence of ideas and skills. There is a specific sequence of ideas that makes percents easy to learn, intuitive to understand, and simple to use. Unfortunately, textbooks or teachers do not use this sequence since it is not easy to figure out the sequence as a teacher. The sequence is also not the usual one you would find in other textbooks, because of this reason.
Q: So you promise me that in about 5 hours students will master percents?
Yes. If not, ask me for your money back as I promise.
