This book is unique in its approach to word problems. The approach, developed over many years of tutoring and teaching at many levels, provides a system to solve any type of problem. The system consists of 7 principles that reduce problems, even the most complex ones, to a series of simple steps. I have used the system with students of all ages, abilities (including students with learning disabilities), and skills, uniformly with great success. The success was not due my ability as a teacher, but rather due to the system explained in the book. As one student told me on behalf of one of the class (he was the brave one), "Moti, with your books we don't need you," which of course made me happy.
This book provides a radically different approach to word problem solving than any suggested and used. In the book I show why existing methods and approaches fail again and again, and why students find problem solving so perplexing. The unique approach circumvents the main difficulty underlying problem solving, as well as many other contributing factors.
Q: Who is it intended for?
It is intended for three types of readers and uses:
1. 6th graders (and above) who are proficient readers and can study independently. They will benefit from the principles and examples. The older ones (8th graders and above) would also benefit from the more general explanations about problem solving.
2. Parents: parents of children of all ages would benefit significantly by learning how to guide their children through problem solving, regardless of the specific domain. It would not only enhance parents' ability to solve problems but would provide them with an easy to use system to teach their children. Naturally, homeschooling parents would benefit from it even more.
3. Teachers:teachers often find teaching problem solving, and specifically word problem solving, the most difficult topic to teach. The book explains why current approaches fail, and how to teach students to solve any type of problem with out difficulty.
