My name is Moti Levi.
I started teaching Math as a private tutor when I was in 7th grade. By the time I was in 9th grade, I was teaching 8 students at the same time, because I refused to teach more than 4 hours a day after school! I was sent the "worst" students, and yet, all my students would get 90-100% on their tests after they started learning with me.
During my undergraduate studies in Math, I taught in different schools at different levels. I taught 8th graders in the "worst” public school in Tel Aviv (I was born and grew up in Israel). I also taught 11th and 12th graders in a private high school for kids who had been kicked out from the public school system, and had come to the private school as a last refuge (it was not a "good" private school like the ones in the US).
At the time, I wrote a few booklets on specific topics to help me teach, since I was not happy with the textbooks. When I had the students use them in class they told me, "With these books, we don't need you!"
Needless to say, I was very happy about that. Students would find me later and thank me for their extremely high grades on their final national exams in math.
I also taught adults who were retaking those national final exams (in Israel you can do so as many times as you like), in order to get into the university. In those courses I would go from teaching 1+1=2 (no kidding) to calculus, in twice weekly sessions over 3.5 months. Each session would last 3-5 hours, and my students' average score on the exam was around 93%.
I then came to the US and did a PhD in Business at
The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. I was an assistant professor at
Tulane University and at Penn State University and taught courses about operations, e-commerce, decision-making, and other topics. Most of these courses required math as a tool. While I was teaching undergraduate and MBA students, I noticed a fundamental lack of understanding of basic math concepts. I had also become frustrated with my 10-year-old daughter's math education over the past several years. A significant part of her learning took place at home with me. Due to the math curriculum, time constraints and the number of students in her class, the class lesson was not enough to get her to really understand and know the material, although she was and is an excellent student. Seeing this, I started writing material for her to learn with, and soon realized that my contribution could be much higher at the elementary to high school level, than at the college level. This is because in college, it is too late to radically change students' math and analytical skills.
I decided to devote my time completely to my passion for teaching kids.
I love teaching kids how to think, and making Math simple, easy, and fun for EVERYONE.
The books you buy on this/my website are based on almost 30 years of experience of teaching math and related subjects at different levels, to all age groups, in different parts of the world.
I know math can be easy and simple, and I am dismayed by how difficult it is made out to be. This is why I give you my Ten Promises. I know I can keep them, and I want you to benefit from them.
