Q: Where is the list of all LearningByYourself books?

Here: Booklist

Q: Do you have a curriculum?

The way we approach the curriculum is to have books that cover each subject fully, and outline the correct flow between books. You can find this flow here: TopicsMap.

This approach ensures that a student learn at her own individual pace, and according to the correct underlying mathematical structure.

Q: How do I match your books to the regular grade-based books and curricula?

There are two answers:

1. You do not have to. If you follow the correct flow of our books, your child will advance much faster than her peer group, and understand the underlying ideas better. Instead of learning bits and pieces in a disconnected way as a grade-based curriculum dictates, your child will learn everything about a subject before s/he moves to the next subject in the flow. Some of the subjects can be studied in parallel, and letting your child choose how to proceed will ensure higher motivation.

2. If you feel you have to match the books to your child’s school curriculum, ask his/her teacher for the math topics covered in that grade. Then choose the books that cover those topics. Make sure your child knows the prior subjects as shown by the TopicsMap. Often, the problems in one subject can be traced to incomplete understanding of a prior subjects, as per the flow. However, teachers are not taught how to diagnose this, and therefore the common phenomenon is of repeated explanations, drills, and growing frustration on the parts of both the teacher and student. Customers who have followed this advice uniformly report many of their problems solved.

Q: Are the books meant to be for remedial or advanced students?

Both and neither. The books are designed to allow each student to learn at his or her own pace. The books are also designed to prevent any problems that usually arise from incomplete coverage, incomplete explanations, and lack of explanation of mathematical ideas. Therefore, students can advance at the fastest pace they are able!

Q: What are your plans for future books?

LearningByYourself will be releasing books as per the TopicsMap. After those topics are covered, we will address middle school and high school subjects, such as Algebra and Geometry.

Q: In the Topics Map, you list word problems as a separate subject. I thought word problems were specific to a subject, not a subject by itself.

This is exactly the problem. Word Problems are a separate subject matter that can be applied to other subjects (example: word problems with fractions). We believe that the right way to teach word problems is as a separate and unique subject. Then, students can be shown how to apply the strategy and methods for solving word problems in a specific domain. The strategy and methods for solving word problems are universal, not domain specific.

Q: I am a teacher. How can I use your books?

We urge you to contact us and we will guide you. There are several ways of using the books to enhance your students' experience, knowledge and skills, AND test scores. Here are some ideas:

1. Students can learn a lesson at home BEFORE coming to class. Class time is then devoted to enrichment and deeper understanding of the concepts.
2. Class time can be devoted to small group learning, with students going through the books at their own pace and receiving help from their group members, and if needed, from the teacher. This allows you to provide personal attention as needed. It also allows students to learn from each other, which tends to be a very successful way of learning, and a way that students love as it gives them a sense of empowerment.

Q: As a teacher, can I receive a discount for buying multiple copies of the same book? Do you have a site license policy?

Please contact us, and we will work out the best way to serve you and your students.

Q: I am a charity, what can you do for me?

Simple: Print and give away as many copies as you want for all those who get help from your charity. Our mission is to provide every single student in the world with the best math education we can provide. We believe that those who cannot pay should still receive high quality education, since education is the best way out of poverty! We only ask that you share your experience with us. Please contact us, and we will do our best to help you.
